'Summer at Woodhorn - Pitmen Painters: Resurfacing' invites you to discover and celebrate The Ashington Group
‘Summer at Woodhorn - Pitmen Painters: Resurfacing’ invites you to discover & celebrate The Ashington Group, a group of artists whose story is rooted in Northumberland ’s industrial, cultural & artistic heritage. The much-loved permanent Ashington Group Gallery at Woodhorn Museum will be complemented by temporary exhibitions and events, running between Saturday 26 May and Sunday 16 September. Note: Woodhorn opening hours/days: 10am-4pm, Wednesday - Sunday plus Monday and Tuesday during Northumberland School Holidays.
The Ashington Group began in the 1930s as a group of coal miners learning about art. Within weeks they were producing their own artwork and in time their paintings amounted to a unique record of working-class life in a northern mining community. In ‘Ashington Group Unseen ’, visitors will have the opportunity to view previously unseen works by Ashington Group members on loan to the museum from private homes and collections. Narbi Price, winner of the Contemporary British Painting Prize 2017, will present his new body of work, The Ashington Paintings.
During the Northumberland school summer holidays, everyone can have a go at making art in our Pop-Up Ashington Group Hut. This family-friendly artist-led experience is inspired by the hut where the Ashington Group met to explore art, work & life.
As part of the Great Northumberland Programme, on the weekend of the 18 and 19 August, explore the story of the Ashington Group in more depth. Join artist & Ashington Group Trustee Narbi Price, who will lead walking tours of the connected exhibitions and talk about his wider artistic practice at 2pm each day. Free but booking essential.
