Carnival Capers at Seaton Delaval Hall

2018 sees Seaton Delaval Hall celebrating 300 years of dramatic history. It is the tricentenary of the commissioning of this Grade 1 listed building, designed by renowned architect Sir John Vanbrugh. Once home to the Delaval family, the most notorious of all Georgian partygoers and pranksters, an invitation to Seaton Delaval Hall quickly became one of the hottest tickets in town.

Walk the Plank will create a whole day event for all the family, (why don’t you come in costume and party like the Delavals?). Enjoy a big party atmosphere full of fun and frolics, magic and mischief, spectacle and sorcery, trickery and theatre at the Hall. Carnival Capers brings history alive with music, performances, and parades taking place at timed moments throughout the day across the grounds.

What better way to start your summer than a party? Inspired by the Delavals’ love of a good celebration we’re hosting a grand summer spectacle that will rival their eighteenth century antics! On Saturday 28 July Seaton Delaval Hall will host sensory extravaganza Carnival Capers, when it will be transformed by colour, music and lively performances for all to enjoy.

There’s a host of activities on offer from percussionist and sound sculptor Ben Gates to the enchanting and vaudevillian Circo Rum Ba Ba.  Circus Central will be in The Oval encouraging you to try your hand at all sorts of circus skills and dazzling you with their own talents while George Orange will perform feats of balancing brilliance in his show, Man On the Moon in The Paddock...  How does he do it?

Virtuoso violinist Sid Bowfin brings an unpredictable and unhinged blend of comedy and music to the day, whilst slightly bonkers cabaret artist Bruce Airhead performs acrobatic feats you never thought possible with balloons!  Head to the Saloon to hear the stunning sound of Kidology's glass harp and maybe even have a go yourself!   Expect roving performers and surprises throughout the day.

Don't just rock up, frock up!

Come in your favourite, brightest costume and take part in the Carnival Capers parade. Led by our very own ringmaster with accompanying music by wandering brass troubadours and North East favourites, The Baghdaddies, our performers will lead you on a merry dance through the grounds.

Bring a Picnic

If you want to take a bit of time out and enjoy Seaton Delaval Hall’s beautiful gardens in the sunshine, why not bring a picnic lunch and blanket and chill out in our dedicated picnic area, where our roving musicians including the Bottle Bank Band will be on hand for your enjoyment while you rest and refresh.

Why Not Leave the car at home

To ensure you enjoy your day and get to the hall without delay we encourage you to car share, walk, bike ride or take public transport. Parking on site is limited, so please bear this in mind when travelling to the hall.

Just like the parties of 300 years ago at Seaton Delaval Hall, Carnival Capers is set to be the hottest ticket in town, so book yours now to avoid disappointment! Tickets are completely free but you are strongly advised to book in advance as there are a very limited number of tickets available on the day.  You can get tickets for one of three sessions: 11am-2pm, 2-5pm and 5-7pm.  The parade and most of our acts will repeat their performances at each session, so regardless of which time slot you choose to attend you won’t miss out!

Carnival Capers is produced in conjunction with Northumberland County Council and outdoor arts experts Walk the Plank as part of Northumberland County Council’s Great Northumberland 2018 events programme.
