Celebrate the Northern Poetry Library’s 50th Anniversary in Morpeth

The Northern Poetry Library is turning 50 and, to celebrate, they will be launching a brand-new Poem of the North, as well as teaming up with local performing arts company, November Club for a special visit from The Remarkable Dr McCavity and his Travelling Surgery!

Based at The Chantry building in Morpeth, the Northern Poetry Library (NPL) is the largest collection of post-World War II poetry in England outside of London, home to constellations of finely-tuned, often moving and sometimes unnerving words. With over 15,000 volumes, including first editions, signed copies, junior and anthology sections, the Northern Poetry Library’s collection is extensive – plus, it spans continents and languages.

For Great Northumberland 2018, the Northern Poetry Library’s 50thanniversary festivities will include a visit to Morpeth by The Remarkable Dr McCavity and his Travelling Surgery. Between 11am and 4pm, on Saturday 21 July, the esteemed Doctor will take to the streets of Morpeth, alongside his glamorous assistant, Ginger Vitis. Inspired by nineteenth-century quack practitioners of all sorts, November Club’s very own Dentist will dispense very special prescriptions in rhyme. But, be warned, these rhyming prescriptions will only be available for one day only… plus, you’ll need to experience Dr McCavity’s notoriously hilarious tooth-drawing skills to get one!

Meanwhile, over at the National Poetry Library, a newly-commissioned Poem of the North will be launched at 2pm. This special digital artwork will feature new poems from writers with a Northern connection. To celebrate this special anniversary project, a poetry reading by Northern poets and local people, who have selected their favourite poems from the collection, will take place at the Chantry – where everyone is welcome!

Set to be a vibrant day of words, wisdom (teeth) and wonder – the Northern Poetry Library’s 50thanniversary celebrations are not to be missed!

Join in on the celebrations on Saturday 21 July from 10am – 4pm
