CORONATION

FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED

Numerous Coronation events were held across the UK and beyond in the lead up to and during the bank holiday on Monday 8 May 2023.

To mark the occasion, residents were encouraged to organise celebratory events for The King’s Coronation on the weekend of 6 and 7 May 2023, and on the special bank holiday on 8 May.

Northumberland Library Service programme of community.

To honour the new King’s love of the environment, families picked-up a free packet of red, white and blue Coronation wildflower seeds when they visited a library on or before Coronation Day.

On Coronation Day the county’s five hub libraries at Berwick, Blyth, Cramlington, Hexham and Morpeth showed the colourful pageant of Britishness at its best for residents who’d like to watch with friends and neighbours in a safe, warm community environment.

Hub libraries also displayed photographs, press-cuttings and other memorabilia provided by Northumberland Archives to highlight the county’s links to the previous Royal Coronations.

Alnwick Castle Coronation Screening

To mark the King’s Coronation on 6 May, Alnwick Castle held a celebration of Local Community Heroes – those who have gone above and beyond to support individuals and enrich their communities.

It provided an opportunity for residents to enjoy the Coronation Day in a majestic setting.

The outdoor event featured a large screen TV and concessions for refreshments. Guests also brought picnics.

DCMS and UK Government supported and contributed to the funding of the Alnwick Castle Screening Event.
